Hard Love by Ellen Wittingler

Hard Love, written by Ellen Wittlinger is a beautiful, heartbreaking, provoking love story between two teenagers. John, an average American teenager lives a lonely life after his parents’ divorce and in order to overcome this loneliness, he starts to write zines (homemade magazines). He then meets Marisol, a lesbian who will change his life and will become his inspiration for this zines. As the story goes by, John acquires a certain level of maturity that will make him see life through a whole new perspective.

This is one of my favorite books. Wittlinger’s ability to get into the teens’ minds creates these awesome characters that act out of their lives and live in realistic and touching situations. It is a novel of discovery and has a realistic end, not a happy ever after, but real teenage problems that are in search of their sexuality and of what love is and all the damages it can make.
