Most of the time, when someone gets interested into King´s work, they tend to move to his big tomes (The Dark Tower series, IT, Pet Cemetery) best-sellers. Honestly, doing that is one of the biggest mistakes when entering the frightening King´s world. What should be a delightful reading becomes a confusing fusion of references to other works, because when King names someone “Jack” in Book A, he may be referring to the “Jack” of Book B. What this author tends to do is to connect names between his books. Easy for a veteran, a pain in the ass for any newbie. If you are a newbie =), then be humble and start with one of his firsts. If you start with the books that made him evolve into the star he is now, you will eventually evolve with him, and understand better IT, The Dark Tower, Rose Madder, etc. And Carrie is just the perfect book to start with.
Carrie´s quick review: Carrie is the typical freak bullied by literally anyone in the school. Geez, even the teachers think she is stupid, a pig. This happened for several reasons:
Reason #1: Her mother is a hyper religious psycho who has transmitted only fear and regrets to her only daughter. Carrie wants to be accepted, but she is having problems escaping her matriarchal terrible claws.
Reason #2: Something about Carrie just doesn´t fit the social standards. So, if it´s not normal, hate it. She is not pretty, she is religious, she is not popular, she has no friends, she wears weird skirts and unfashionable clothes, and she is slow.
Reason #3: For some reason, we all need someone to tease, someone to hate, and that little demon inside everyone of us knows they won´t do anything to stop us…
Unless they have psychokinetic powers.
Yes, indeed: Carrie discovers at the beginning of the book that she has the power of moving things with her mind. Revenge comes in a sweet but painful supremacy, and will imply the destruction of a whole generation. No, it is not as scary as other books. Its main impacts are the portrait of society and the sensible and heart-breaking Carrie, who will not find peace until finishing with all the hope she has left.
So, what are you waiting for? This is the perfect book to start discovering the King´s world, and for any foolish bully who thinks the world is a tiny shell of Status Quos. Be careful: you never know how much you can damage a person, and how much that person can damage you once the limit has been crossed. Happy March, and lovely screams!
