Hello there! I am happy to see you still here, young and with all your human parts in the right place. As you may already know or not know, whatever is the case, I am again here to present you another mystic discovery. Personally, I had never read Lovecraft before, and the version they have in the library has a very funny cover (with a hilarious eye that was supposed to be sadistic) Nevertheless, I rent it and I can now tell you Lovecraft´s stories are anything but “lovely”. The selection of short stories presented “In the Vault” is written in the good-old method: with a lack of nasty words, but with a 400%, exponential growth of madness. Nothing can beat Lovecraft’s mysterious and prehistoric sects, nor can any human resist the Call of Cthulhu. I strongly recommend four petite bloodcurdling narrations:
In the Vault: This story, which gives the collection its name and is the first one presented in the book, is very effective in dragging the attention of the reader, with a descriptive beginning of the main character, a gravedigger, and his unfortunate misfortune: he is shut down in the special room… full of corpses. Well, he is O.K. with that (he is a gravedigger after all)…Until something starts moving.
The Music of Erich Zann: If you like music, especially the violin, you will be delighted with this masterpiece of tension and insanity. A young man can´t find anymore the street where he used to rent a department. He remembers encountering a German violinist who could play with a flawless system….Maybetoo flawless. What is that thing which controls poor Zann and his exhausted hands?
The Thing on the Doorstep: The best of Lovecraft´s cult stories (well, some people like more The Call of Cthulhu). What is so fascinating is the persistent feeling, as you continue reading, that there´s something wrong with everybody;everybody has their own issues, their own lethal issues. And they can´t escape…. Not even with death.
The Color Out of Space: My favorite one. A meteor lands in the terrain of a farmer, and rapidly evaporates in thin air. But something has break through the soil, the trees´ roots, the animals and people. What is the story behind the thing that hides on the well? Have you ever seen trees moving on a steady night? Let old Ammi tell you what he saw 44 years ago, and let him tell you the horrors he lived on the “blasted heath”.
And obviously folks, I´m giving you the sources:
(In English): Read Lovecraft’s complete stories at:http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/index.html
(In Spanish): Read my favorite story, “The Color out of Space”, at:http://www.ciudadseva.com/textos/cuentos/ing/lovecraf/color.htm
But, if you, like me, love the real physic portable stuff, look for the next code on the library: PS 3523 .O833 A6 2001 or PS 3523 .O833 A6 1998
Enjoy the anguish, and happy slaughter!
