The Mystery of Twitter Unveiled

Well, most of you might be wondering what is Twitter. All of us have heard this word, but do you know how does Twitter really work? which are the uses of this web page? This article will try to clarify these doubts.

It is important to notice that I’m not trying to convince you to create a Twitter account, but only showing you the potential of this service and to make you think that, if we can have access to the service, why don’t take advantage of it? You can always enter to Wikipedia and get a lot of information, but I really think that the word of a user is more truthful.

What is Twitter? Twitter by itself is a micro blogging service. This term is derived from the “blog concept”: web pages were one or more authors can post articles or any kind of information. Twitter works under the same principle but at a smaller scale. The articles, that in this case are called “updates”, cannot exceed 140 characters. Seems worthless? Let’s face it, 140 characters can say a lot.

Why Twitter? This is a question that I have been hearing since some time ago, and it is normal, our reaction to what we don’t know is always questioning it. I personally asked the same question at a start, but after using it and making some research I got to know better its applications.

1. You can keep in touch with friends. Even if it sounds too stalking it is true. We are interested in what our friends are doing. Why not let our close people to know it. A great application for it is, for example, when you want to organize a party at last minute. You can take you’re cell phone and send a SMS or make use of Facebook, but Twitter offer another alternative and, as I said before why do not take advantage of it. With a simple update: “Party at my house, 8 o´clock” your entire group of followers can be informed in less than a minute. And if someone tries to claim you that he wasn’t invited, you have the perfect excuse, “IT WAS ON TWITTER” (just kidding)

2.Are you fan of any celebrity? Well, again it can sound as stalking but, seriously, who doesn’t like to know what your favorite actors and singers are doing. In twitter you can find different celebs ex. Ashton Kutcher (@aplausk) Ellen Degeneres (@TheEllenShow) Juanes (@juanes); and what about politicians? You can also find them here. Even Barack Obama (@BarackObama) is in Twitter.

3.You can keep track of what it is happening. In Twitter you can find an account that post updates which match with your interests. CNN has a Twitter account where they post the breaking news; Cinepolis is always posting the last news about movies. Now more and more public events are being followed by twitter with special created accounts. The Emmys 2009, created its own account where all the nominations and the names of the winners were posted at real time.
4.More than updates. Twitter is not just 140 characters, it has been evolving and more services are being introduced. Twitpic.com is another webpage that works along with Twitter.com and allows sharing photos with your followers. The photos are uploaded via Twitpic.com and it automatically generates an update in your Twitter account with a link that redirects your friends to the photo. Another service that Twitter is about to submit is the geotagging of updates, which will allow users to know the location from where an update has been post. These two services and all the other ones that Twitter supports, provide a wide range of opportunities for communication, for show your friends what you’re seeing, for keeping in touch; even businesses can get benefits from the use of them.

Now that you know what does twitter is and how does it work you can decide if twitter is for you. I just want to say give it a shot and you might discover how useful it can be.

Concerns about privacy:

As in every service provided in Internet, we can find some threats to our privacy, but Twitter allows the user to regulate the access to his updates by making the profile private and sending a request to you every time someone wants to follow your updates. At this point the user is the only one that can choose whether to make his profile public or private.
